Women's Place in the Church
The Divine rule for man and wife still stands in the Church today, and in the Divine rule in the Churches, while one family in Christ God made certain distinctions as to the place of service in the Churches. Just like in the home God has given Divine order and place of labor of both male and female. Paul had women helpers as we find in Philippians Chapter 4 verse 3. Paul gave strict rules under the anointing of God’s Spirit that Godly women should not Teach or Usurp Authority over men (1Timothy 2:8-14).
While holding her place in her home life as wife and a mother, the Sisters of the Church have a God given place of labor, which has greater influence to the glory of God, if faithful. Yes, there are places to teach where they do not usurp authority over the men in violation of God’s Laws for the Church. They are to teach the young women to love their own husband, to love their children (Titus 1:4-5), that is the first responsibility for a young mother to know what her first priorities are. Older or more mature Christian women can help in this matter, and here we have a command to teach their own daughters and other young women the God given place of a wife and mother in the home life. Teaching those young women to be discreet, chaste, keepers of the home (Titus 3:3-5), not leaving children and home to a baby sitter, while following another vocation.
As Christian mothers above all others can deeply implant the seed of truth in the young and tender hearts, even more than the fathers, the mothers mold the life, character, and destiny of children. Every stage and phase of life is touched and influenced by her. Infancy, childhood, youth, manhood, and old age alike look to her for inspiration, thus she is both the morning and evening star of life. No position in life is superior to that of the mother, no influence more potent for good or evil. Just like in the home God has given Divine order and place of labor for both male and female, and the female place is not to be a Preacher or a Deacon in the Church of God. A woman should attempt nothing, ether in public or in private that belongs to man as his peculiar function. He (Paul) sets high standards for the wives of the Church officers, and for women in official positions, urges a subordinate but noble role for women.
The terms “Elder” and “Bishop” are used interchangeably in the New Testament. The “Elder” of Acts chapter 20 verse 17 are called “Bishop” in verse 28. In Titus chapter 1 verse 5, Elder in the Church Crete are mentioned. In listing qualifications for such an office, Paul calls them “Bishops” in verse 7. These men (not women) were required to be blameless in their lives and obedient to the truth in their faith (1 Tim. 3:1-7; Titus 1:6-9). Their duties involved Spiritual oversight of the congregation and teaching the word. Those who rule well, was a good teacher were worthy of honor on both these aspects of their work. Those Elders must be men, the husband of one wife. No matter how holy or how good a woman is they could not meet this qualification. Yes, God has a place for women, but those Elders ordained by God to oversee those Churches were not women, but men.
The Christian Church is God’s house, and every believer is a habitation of God through the Spirit. The assembly in which God lives and works: the true Church of God is His family on earth, and as members, both men and women must behave according to Divine Rules which are given in the Scriptures, “privilege, honor, dignity, or right.” He who is made a child of God can enjoy the greatest “Privilege” which the Divine Being can confer on this side of eternity. Those who accept Jesus as He has offered to them in the Gospel have, through his blood, a “right to this Sonship” in the Family of God (Galatians 3:26-27).
Paul is not silent about the role of a woman in Church. Again, we are told that a woman is to learn in silence in the services, that a woman is not allowed to teach nor to usurp authority over man. Women may testify and give their own experience, thanksgiving and praise, but are never to speak as a teacher in the congregation, or exhorting or preaching to them. In a prayer circle with women only there, each one may bring their own burden in prayer before the Lord. Under no circumstance should a woman speak with authority to carry the burden of the whole congregation to God in prayer.
A woman might teach other women or children as we plainly see from Titus chapter 2 verses 3-5. A woman may do personal work, visiting the poor, winning souls, singing, but certainly never to take a place of leadership in a Church by teaching mixed classes, or men classes, or being a Pastor.
There were twelve apostles, and not a single one of them was a woman. There were many Pastors and Evangelist in the New Testament, and never a single one of them was a woman. The Bible never put a woman in charge of a congregation, or preaching, or as Evangelists in the Old or in the New Testament time.
The Bible does speak that there were prophetesses that prophesied, but not in a congregation, only to their husbands or among themselves. We do not know of a single case in the Bible where any woman addressed a public congregation giving her prophecy.
There were no Women Pastors, no Women Apostles, no Women Evangelist, and no Women Savours. Scripture makes it clear that a woman was originally made as a helpmeet, an assistant, and never as a ruler over men. God did not make women the same as man. Women are not on an equal basis with men in executive and ruling gifts. The way God made a woman according to the Bible disqualifies her for leadership in the Church.
The evidence is that throughout the Bible women are commanded to be in subjection and submit to their own husbands, to reverence their husband and to obey (Ephesians 5:22). The word Reverence in the dictionary is to honor, and venerate; the highest degree of respect; and with awe. Women were never meant to be equal with men in executive and ruling gifts. The way God made woman according to the Bible disqualifies her for leadership in Government, Business and the Church.
Doubtless, the greatest harm caused by women preachers is that they so debase the public’s conception of the minister that men feel no desire to enter it. There has been much harm done from unrestrained emotions, hysterias, unseemly confusion, and the false doctrine where preachers are women as in the Pentecostal movement.
One of the worst thing about man’s way, however good, is that it is a substitute for God’s way, and prevent the great blessing God would give in many cases. However, it is best not to go by our own judgment or experience, but simply abide by the plain, unmistakable teaching of the Bible. No Church is in the will of God nor following the New Testament when it has a woman Pastor. And it may expect to have the trouble that always comes when we get out of the will of God, and try man’s way instead of God’s way if it gets a woman leader.
Today, except for the need to earn a living, the majority of the people appear to have no basic purpose whatsoever. They eat, drink, sleep, work and propagate their species without it once occurring to them that they are missing the goal for which they were created. For to those who have been hypnotized--indeed so often blinded--by the customary values, these ideas of a woman Pastor to some seem to be extraordinary.
We may ask: “Is it right for those who wish to be true to God to take part in such worship?” A real Christian is far too conscious of his own shortcomings to wish to add to them by encouraging insincerity, and he feels that for people to pray for “Spiritual revival” while allowing false doctrine in refusing to obey
