What is Sin
Sin? Is there such a thing as sin today? Is there a right and wrong, good or bad? What or who gives us these guidelines if any? We live in a society today where there is no such thing as wrong-if it's right for you. . . everyone has heard that one. Is this true? Is this what grace is about? No Sin! Grace Abounds! This means we won't be held accountable for anything we do, right? We either live under grace and there is no such thing as sin anymore, or we still have good and evil, or purity and sin, which is it?
1. What is sin in God's eyes? I John 3:4 Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law. Romans 3:20 Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin. Romans 7:7 What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet. Galations 3:24 Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith. 1 Timothy 1:9-10 Knowing this, that the law is not made for a righteous man, but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and for sinners, for unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers, for whoremongers, for them that defile themselves with mankind, for men stealers, for liars, for perjured persons, and if there be any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine; I John 5:17 All unrighteousness is sin: and there is a sin not unto death. Transgression means violation, so you can see that the Lord gave us the law so we would know what sin is so we would not violate His laws! The law was made for us to learn what pleases the Lord and what he hates. The law wasn't made to make us miserable, but to protect us, to show us the way, to give us that boundary we so need. How are we able to please the Lord if we are sinning? Would God have been a merciful God if He had told us not to sin and not tell us what sin is? And how can we know what sin is if He didn't give us the laws?
2. Where are these laws found? Psalms 19:7 The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple. I John 2:3-4, 7 And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments. He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. Brethren, I write no new commandment unto you, but an old commandment which ye had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word which ye have heard from the beginning. Matthew 19:17-19 And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments. He saith unto him, Which? Jesus said, Thou shalt do no murder, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Honor thy father and thy mother: and, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. Exodus 20:3-17 Thou shalt have no other gods before me. Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments. Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain. Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labor, and do all thy work: But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it. Honor thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee. Thou salt not kill. Thou salt not commit adultery. Thou salt not steal. Thou salt not bear false witness against thy neighbor. Thou salt not covet thy neighbor's house, thou salt not covet thy neighbor's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbor's. Are there laws to keep? Yes, and He was very clear about the laws of God, they are perfect! We are Not! He knows this, this is where grace fits in, we cannot keep the commandments of God alone, and the commandments will not save you, they are the guidelines He gives us and yes, we must keep them, to the best of our ability with the Grace and Love of God. Jehovah would not have told us to keep His laws if He didn't give them to us! All His laws He gives to us shows how to love Him and how to love our neighbors, it is all about how to love one another.
3. Who has sinned, are we all sinners? Romans 5:12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned: Isaiah 59:2 But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear. Romans 3:10, 23 As it is written, Their is none righteous, no, not one: For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; Ecclesiastes 7:20 For there is not a just man upon earth, that doeth good, and sinneth not. Isaiah 64:6 But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousness are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.
According to scriptures, everyone is a sinner, no one is perfect, we have all sinned, we are unclean, and why? Sin has separated us from God, sin, breaking the laws of God, turning away from His words, calling evil good. This is why Jesus Christ came to lay down His life for us, because of our sins, because we are sinners.
4. Who will not enter into the Kingdom of God due to sin? Romans 1:26-32 For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompense of their error which was meet. And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient; Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers, backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, Without understanding, covenant breakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful: Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.
1 Corinthians 3:16-17 Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.
Galatians 5:19-21 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revelings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.
Hebrews 10:26 For if we sin willfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins, Matthew 10:32-33 Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven. But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven.
And society says there is no such thing as good or evil, pure and sin? The Lord says quite a bit on the subject of sin and what will separate us from the Lord. How many realize that your body is the temple of the Lord? How many abuse it by what they put into it, or what they do to it on the outside of it? No sin? I don't think so, the Lord made it perfectly clear what He does not like, what we are to stay away from, our
boundaries. He clearly said if we sin willfully after we receive the truth there remains no more sacrifice for us! We must know what sin is in order to serve our Lord!
5. What is the outcome of sinners? Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. Romans 1:29-32 Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers, Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, Without understanding, covenant breakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful: Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them. Romans 5:12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned: James 1:15 Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.
Revelation 21:8 But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.
The scriptures are very clear on what sin is. Look around you sin is everywhere, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, in a large city, or a small town. Sin will take hold of you and send you to hell, the lake of fire. The Lord didn't hide anything from us, He wants no one to perish, but we must live by His words, laws included. How do we know sin? But by the law, what is the outcome for the sinner? Damnation, lake of fire. Our hope, Jesus Christ. . .
Romans 5:8-10 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him. For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.
